- Tobacco and alcohol are the most commonly used substances that cause veterans harm. However, prescription medication and illicit substance misuse also have a significant impact.
- Alcohol dependence is often comorbid with substance use. Therefore, screen for multiple substances. e.g. the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST).
- Some clients may receive services for alcohol and other drug use through DVA contracted arrangements with hospitals and day procedure centres
