Rob's story
Peer Rob, who was a Lance Corporal with 7RAR and deployed to Iraq in 2008, explains that while he feels proud to have served, the day has become an opportunity for him to educate his daughters and reflect on his service and the impact it has had on his life.
“There was a time in my serving life where Anzac Day was something to look forward to, a real celebration of the sacrifice those of us that serve make.”
“I wouldn’t say I look forward to Anzac Day the way I used to, but when it comes around, I feel proud to have served and even more proud to still be helping the veteran and family community”.
As a Peer, Rob has brought a unique perspective to helping others. He understands the importance of building a connection and looking at the whole person, rather than just focusing on a medical diagnosis.
Rob emphasises the importance of seeking support when facing challenges.
Sharing his own experience of struggling with injury and feeling jaded during his transition Rob says, “I was suffering from the effects of injury, struggling to come to terms with the fact my life was not going to move forward as I had hoped and I found myself in a space of withdrawal, I was avoiding things that previously gave me joy and I was not the best person to be around.”
It was only after a friend suggested seeking help that Rob realised the value of communicating his problems to others. Through self-discovery and seeking support, he found answers and potential solutions to his challenges.
"It's okay to not be okay, and asking for help is not a burden. There are many people willing and able to help."
Rob shares that seeking support can be transformative, “I’ve always found in my life, a problem shared is a problem halved.”
As we commemorate ANZAC Day this year, let us remember the sacrifices made by our service members and their families, and also take a moment to acknowledge the importance of support and connection in helping those who have served.
